POLL: Shopping - locally or major supermarket?

Nowadays there's almost too many options for shopping - you can even do it online! But when it comes to a shopping day, do you look to your major supermarket brands (Tesco, Sainsbury's) for a stock up, or do you go locally to the little shop down the road?

Thankfully I live in a multi-cultural area with lots of great local shops. Food much fresher, tastier, and better value for money as a bonus. Love big bunches of coriander, fresh pomegranates, huge artichokes, good quality olive oil and even cheaper than supermarkets, as well as the usual staples. Order meat from a local farm and co-ordinate deliveries dates with neighbour. Will pop into a supermarket occasionally if I'm passing or to buy the odd thing that the smaller places don't have. Will not go into certain ones as don't like their ethos, would rather do without.

ASDA and Waitrose mainly. I buy tea from the local tea merchants, and we get some stuff from the market. We have a friend who supplies free range eggs from her chickens.

With a large family, we purchase household supplies like paper towel roll infrequently, at large store wholesaler. Milk and veg/ fruit get delivered on regular rota. Everything else and emergency items are purchased in our village shops.

Wouldn't it be lovely if we could all afford to shop in specialists shops. Thank goodness for supermarkets.

I (and many others) have found it's a bit of a myth about supermarkets that they are so cheap. Value for money is what I would also look for. I want good quality food without silly specialty prices. I shop a lot at my local Turkish greengrocer/mini supermarket. He eats what he sells so doesn't buy things if they don't taste good. When I asked him why he stocked organic eggs but not organic milk he said he could taste the difference in the eggs but not the milk. His huge bunches of coriander are wonderful and tasty cherry tomatoes are superior to the 'Taste the difference' marketed ones that only taste good compared to the 'normal' ones that taste so bad (or just lack any taste!)!

I do have a local supermarket I buy the odd item and when they ran out the other day I went to a smaller store about 10 doors away and where the supermarket charged £5.99 they sold it for £4.50. I also discovered shaving cream at the local chemist for £1 cheaper than the supermarket. Same with the fish shop, salmon and other fish a fraction of supermarket prices and even if similar prices, the quality is much better and fish fresher. So I buy less and less at the supermarket as time goes on. I also like to support independent traders where possible (although only if they sell good food).

I don't go to dozens of stores, just 2-3 that are all within visible radius. Sometimes it's worth challenging our own assumptions and trying something different.

We shop local where we can. Really lucky where we live in saddleworth to have access to some fantastic local shops.

It's all about the local markets for me: buying what's in season, having a relationship with the greengrocer/butcher/fishmonger/baker, and eating fresh!

I usually go to a big Tesco's nearby but when I have the chance I'll head to a farmer's market and grab some fresh veg/fruit - even if it goes off quickly I know that's because it's actually fresh!

I always keep grocery shopping and other purchases separate. I usually go to the market or supermarket myself for fresh food. I cannot trust this choice on an online site. But as far as clothing is concerned, this is a completely different matter. The Internet gives us a huge choice and I really like it. My last purchase was quality underwear. This will probably be my favorite store for the next few months)
