Hi all, we are building and designing our house currently and I always wanted a laundry room upstairs for convenience however our architect, my partner and family all think I'm crazy - noise, if it leaks etc. I am now thinking we won't but before I do I wanted to ask does anyone have a view that would help my decision wither way?? We have the space so that isn't an issue
I have installed laundry rooms on the second floor level but most people have them on the first floor since they spend most of their time there. For instance you can swap clothes from the washer to the dryer in between cooking dinner. Others insist on the second floor since that is where the bulk of laundry comes from or goes to when done. I have also seen both in the same home, up and down. There is a safety control valve that can be installed that has an electronic sensor that will sense the water break if one occurs and shuts the water off automatically before extreme damage is done. Installing a tiled floor with a floor drain is also recommended.
It seems that the objections of noise can be addressed with sound proofing in the area, and that precautions can be taken to minimize the damage of a possible leak. Why not ask the architect how to address all the concerns and see how much it will cost? This way you are making an informed decision rather not doing it because others think it is crazy.
We have one in our kitchen and to address the noise and vibration, we reinforced the floor with a small concrete slab and bought a very quiet model of washer and dryer. And, you can always install an easy shutoff valve to turn off the water if you aren't using the washer.
Good luck, and having the washer where you want it is not crazy!
I have a Laundry room upstairs and it works perfectly for us. I even throw the dirty laundry into a large drawer in my dressing room, concealed behind a door, that could be reached from the laundry on the other side of the wall. Hence I do not use laundry baskets. Plus I do not like the washing machine to be near the kitchen.
