Traditional or Modern Fires

As previously explained we are building our new home - we now also need to consider what type of fire we will have in the living room.

We can have the option of open fire, woodburner, or gas.

The sofa we have choicen is a chesterfield, with two wing chairs, but we are keen to introduce a modern vibe to the space.

I would love to hear peoples experiences, especially in relation to resale value, and what other home buyers may look for if we decide to move in the future.

There's another option--electric. If you don't need the heat, then electric might be a good solution. They've come a long way since they were first introduced.

Here's a really simple fireplace, and the rocks instead of logs are a nice change.

Well, you could certainly provide some counter height stools without adding onto the counter. I would make the stools simple ones that don't call attention to themselves. Look at how the ones below are there to be sat upon but there's no overhang. The height you will need is called a counter stool. Or you have space for 2 at each end of the island with just a big of an overhang. People just like a place to perch while they chat with you while you're cooking. White stools would blend right into the island and be inconspicuous.

if you're not going to center the dining room table under the light, then I'd tend toward a flush or semi-flush fixture, to de-emphasize the alignment. You might want to remove the medallion from the ceiling too. As for the kitchen it looks like you have decent overall lighting -- maybe you're looking for a couple of pendants over the island? simple glass globes, maybe? here are a few styles to start you out.

ohhh This is perfect!! What a great start! I think at the moment I'm a little overwhelmed by the possibilities! The house was really thoughtfully 'modernised' in the 60's, where they kept the fire places and the like, but it hasnt been updated since and it's a blank canvas.
