Help with interior design bedroom please

Hello we are renovating our new house and I wanted some help/advice with our bedroom please - please see attached a picture of our bed and quilted throw - I'm struggling on colour scheme of walls/wall paper/flooring/curtains etc to match with it in our new house - we are currently in rented accommodation whilst we are doing the new house up so have a boring cream carpet and magnolia walls in our current house!! But the new house will be a new canvass once all re plastered to do what we like ... Any advice/inspiration would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hi there. If you like and plan to keep the quilted throw - it needs accentuating rather than having the pillows and cushion in the same material. To start with I would pick out a colour in the throw - either the duck egg blue or what looks like a pale green, or grey if you like that. The walls painted duck egg blue, and match with a couple of textured cushions in a different material from the throw would stand out better. I would not put wallpaper at all if you are planning to use this throw, as it would be too busy, and you need a calming atmosphere in the bedroom. Know what you mean about magnolia - hate it. I would also use wooden flooring in your new place, and have a rug (at the end of the bed if you have room), or beside the bed, again to pick out the colour palette, or if you use blue, you could have contrast in yellow, go as bold as you dare.

Thankyou - yes I love the quilted throw and spent a lot of money on it so as silly as it sounds I want to design the room around the throw!!!! Duck egg blue sounds good - would you do all walls with it or just a feature wall? There are more pillow cases available that match but I'm guessing this would be too much? Please see pics of the heart pillow also available and a zoomed in pic of the throw. Finally floor wise, would you go oak to match the bed or a lighted white/limed oak for example?

Given the quilt I assume you like a french/vintage/shabby chic look? If so, I would look to add chalk pink (or the pink in the quilt) and the taupe and cream that is in the quilt on the walls and curtains etc. Add some more pale duck egg in lamps etc. A wood floor would be nice in a contrasting colour to your furniture with a big rug. I'd also change the cushions as Ensign said but maybe use on a new bedroom chair?. I think it could take a feature wallpaper maybe something in taupe with flowers and birds. The first pic is from gP & j baker and the 2nd from arthouse. Last image showing colours is from evsemaps.

Feature walls are fine, as long as they do not dominate the room, as I am guessing you want a co-ordinated approach. Sorry, but the cushions do not go at all, and as for the flooring I would go a lighter wood. Matching wood floor and furniture will make the room look very heavy. If you like the wallpaper as suggested by minnie101 - the 2nd from art house would co-ordinate. We can all give suggestions, but in the end it is up to your tastes - do you like feature walls, or do you prefer all one colour. Not nothing is permanent - it is only paint etc.

I agreed, definitely not the 1st paper I posted if you want the quilt to stand out! Also agree re floor and cushions.

thankyou very much for your help... That really helps me... Im trying to do the whole house and Im having a overload in my head at the moment and feel like Im now hitting my head against a brick wall... In stand still now on so many rooms... Need to focus on one at a time.. So you're both saying to replace the matching cushion covers that were sold with the quilted throw as matching (exactly the same pattern and materials but just smaller) and replace with different ones? thanks

Hi lisa. Yes sorry I would lose the cushions, they're not enhancing the quilt. Can you reuse them elsewhere? It's a lot to do a whole house in one go! Good luck!

Thanks, I will do and I will hunt for some more different pillows/cushions. Yes we are fully renovating the house and have a few months lap over and in that time we are doing a garage conversion/extension, creating a family room & utility knocking the kitchen through the end of the lounge and creating a bigger kitchen, opening up an old fire and fitting a log burner, then the normal flooring, decorating oh and re plastering whole house!!!! I need luck so thankyou, I really want to do it right and we have a great opportunity here to do it right. Also need to plan 3 little girls rooms which are different from one another... my imagination struggles with one let alone three!!!! However I now have our room in my head so I'm getting there. thankyou

That is an awful lot of work!! At least you have a few months to get it right. You should post on here for the little girls rooms, people love doing decorating them (maybe not 3 though!). Good luck with it all

minnie101 do you have a name or code of the wallpaper you kindly posted from arthouse? I've searched through and through their website but to no avail... sorry to be a pain!

Suggestions when re-doing the whole house is to concentrate on one room at a time, get that sorted, and then think about the next room - otherwise, as you say, you end up spinning. It always amazes me when firms sell matching cushions and quilts etc - neither the quilt, nor the cushion then stands out, but they all blend together. Was fine in the 1960s when men wore matching shirts and ties, but nowadays there is so much more choice and co-ordination.

Hi, I'd suggest keeping the heart cushion! The reason being is that is *does* tie in with the bed cover as it is in the same print. My suggestion would be to have a vintage chair in the corner of the room maybe a Lloyd loom wicker chair and I would use the heart cushion as an accent on that. I agree with the comment on using a chalky paint because it will add age to the room - especially as your bedroom furniture is new. If you do use a wallpaper my suggestion would be to use it on two walls and paint the others with the lightest colour on the paper. Also you could pleat to coverlet back so that the pillow cases are the decor at the top, next seen is a neutral white or cream duvet, and at the bottom the coverlet. This works really well as the duvet colour should tie in the walls and coverlet and stops it all from being heavy. I have a vintage 50s throw/coverlet which I use in winter on the guest bed. It's pleated back in the day and without fail everyone who has stayed over tell me in the morning that they love pulling it up in the night and feeling cosy! The best asvice though is have fun. It's exciting putting a house together although it can be exhausting!

Thanks Minnie & Ensign that makes total sense & Thankyou. Also Thankyou supergirlvintage for your advice too. One final thing - our bedside tables were bought as a short term measure and not really matching in at all but I was thinking of staining/painting them to match in better - please find a pic attached - would you paint/stain them or would you get rid of them? There are also fitted wardrobes in the room which I'm going to repaint and put new handles on (currently a wood colour!) not sure what colour to go for yet) but with all your help I'm getting there!!!

Keep the bedside tables- you have enough on your plate.
I might buy a fitted sheet and a flat sheet in a dark grey, fold down the quilt so there is a little sheet showing at the pillow.
Then plain pillows, 2 pale grey, two duck egg. Then put a different shaped cushion in front of the pillows.
Use the matching pillows elsewhere such as on a chair.

I can see your bedding in a room like this...with blue walls to match the blue in your quilt and drapes to go with the lace edging, maybe with a border of pink floral trim like is in your quilt (check out "Country Curtains" website)...

Ohhhhh I can't decide now - I had decided on that second arthouse wallpaper and was just looking for any other wall paper for any other rooms to save on postage and then I see these other posts about painting the walls... To wall paper or paint?! Or how about papering wall behind bed with the paper and painting other three walls (the one wall is all built in wardrobes so it's more like painting other 2) definitely thinking the pink ruffle curtains so I suppose light duck egg walls or taupe with paper on the one ??

Thanks Minnie, I am definitely going to go for the wallpaper... thanks for the advice, unfortunately they only seem to have it in duck egg, plum & teal... not the taupe but decorsupplies.co.uk still has it in taupe so I will be ordering today - just need hubby to measure the wall so I can decide if we need 2 or 3 rolls... thanks so much Minnie

http://www.homebase.co.uk/en/homebaseuk/decorating/wallpaper/opera-chinoise-wallpaper---taupe-209342 They seem to have it, I added 3 rolls to the basket. Just type in chinoise when you're in their website rather than searching through paper and they have a few colours. Or am I going mad?!

I think the one with the blue birds on. It picks up the blue you're having on the walls and goes best with the country feel of your bedding, imo anyway :)
