Extra living room/playroom??

Any ideas for a large room with a smallish window (rear-facing and north) so not very bright. Walls Farrow Cream (perhaps could be brighter)? Large white sofa and flat screen TV but nothing else. A third reception room or playroom for 3 & 7yr olds? Dislike room as is and close door but would like to utilise the space. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.

I really like your floors with the light paint.

I think it's nice to have a smaller, cosy room to escape to in winter to curl up and watch TV when the larger reception rooms are cold and take longer/cost more to heat up.

I think with some added storage the room could be a dual purpose den and playroom. A rug and some wallart would look great too.

Would the couch fit under the window to create some more playing space?

A window seat would be great for storage. I would also add tall storage (in gloss white to reflect light) on either the TV wall or presumably you have an empty back wall at the moment. Maybe add a giant colourful world map mural over the sofa? Definitely add a rug. A coffee table would be good for the younger child to use for crafts etc. You could try one of the mid-century designs that are around at the moment with the painted legs so it suits both age groups. Maybe paint the desk in a brighter colour for the older child to use? Choose a paint with a satin finish rather than matt. A mirror will also help with the light. I think the key is storage though as it is a nice room already.

Simplify is always a good strategy with play rooms. The temptation to cover the walls with artwork and posters can add to the visual clutter. I would suggest a larger area rug to ground the space and create a soft place for playing on the floor. A medium colour with a fleck from other hues in the curtains and upholstery will help hide dirt and lint. I think you could definitely cozy it up with a warm wall colour to unify the space. Lastly, closed storage for the toys goes a long way to creating order from the chaos. You will have a lovely space the children enjoy and you find restful.

Just a quick note to thank you all for sharing your thought, ideas, experience and time. I especially want to thank Bluenan and decoenthusiaste for being with me through the all process for the last 6 months or so..., just wanted to post few photos of the results (https://www.houzz.com/discussions/any-ideas-for-final-touches-to-this-living-dinning-room-dsvw-vd~569586) as I feel it is not only me who created this space but it is your creations as much as mine. It may not be perfect or according to the the "Rules", but it is Me and my family. Each and every piece was chosen by me in different parts of the world and each one of them has a unique story behind. I am very pleased with my space. I love it! I am very blessed. .... and so I am off to my new project now... Back to school.... that's really going to be hard ;) Thank you all, once again.

Thanks, I wasn't sure where the 9'4 measurement came in. If you're buying all new furniture then look for items on legs, as you can see the floor beneath it will make the space feel bigger. You can also use glass ie a glass coffee table or Louis ghost chairs for example. I'd also go for a large mirror over the hearth or not knowing your style could also have a ŵall of glass tiles for the same effect which will also bounce light. I'd go for a pale tone sofa and use warmer/darker colours for cushions if wanted. If you want a rug then I'd keep it in the same tone as the floor else to visually maximise floor space. I've drawn a very rough plan (not entirely to scale and obviously not knowing where doors etc are!). I assume you're wanting to buy furniture before you move in? If so do you have a similar size room where you could cut out paper templates of all furniture to see if the space works? I would mount the tv on the ŵall if you have one. Hanging it over a slim console (or slim cabinet for storage) means you can add art on the ŵall and accessorise the console so the tv doesn't become the feature of the ŵall. You could go for a coffee table or a small footstool which can double up as extra seating and table. I'd go for a round dining table, 3ft will seat 4 and you can pull it away from the corner when entertaining. i'd go for a 2 seater sofa (c5f?) but try and get a slim one. I don't know the size of the windows but blinds, shutters may also be an idea so curtains don't encroach on the floor space? In terms of decor do you want light and neutral or dark and moody then people can suggest paint colours?

If you put storage along the back wall. I'd put the mirror over the desk. I dont know if you're an ikea fan but their storage solutions are good, you may even fit one of the TV ones on the back wall so could add games consoles etc years down the line. If you did this you could also free up the current tv area for a table and chairs for the kids. Personally I'd keep to an off white (with yellow undertone) for the walls but you can try mushroom or a number of bright colours work. I have just noticed the desk chair is green so I would just go for white which will look bright against the chair.

That is where you will need a pro who is very familiar with paint colours! You could try farrow and ball, they detail which of their colours have a yellow, red undertone etc. or create a new posting asking for white paint with yellow/creamy undertones and you should get a number of ideas
