What to pair with Duck-Egg Blue kitchen cabinets?

We finally painted our drab oak kitchen cabinets, and used Annie Sloan Duck Egg blue, with Vermont Coatings to finish. I distressed the cabinets a bit, and they look great. Now comes wall color. Any suggestions? We tend towards deeply saturated colors in the rest of the house, but with this cabinet color we are leaning towards a very pale neutral. Our house is an old Vermont farmhouse. Thanks for any tips (or "don't dos")

I like the color of the countertops and the backsplash for a complimentary color....and of course a soft white is always beautiful and clean looking with paler blues.

I'm so glad to hear of a successful kitchen paint job using Annie Sloan chalk paint. I've recommended it to others for this use because I've seen some successful results, but I haven't used it for a kitchen myself. Duck egg blue is a beautiful color! The Annie Sloan site has some suggested colors to go with duck egg blue--all softer and lighter--any one of which would be a lovely wall color. Here's the page:

Since you probably don't want to pay the high price for the chalk paint for your walls, you can color match any of these shades at a Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams store with their computer. Personally, I might be tempted by the soft taupey-gray shade on the upper right (when you scroll down the page to the suggested colors). But it is hard to tell without a photo showing your kitchen in context: trim color, counters, backsplash, floors, whether the kitchen is visible from your other, brighter, rooms, etc.

I love Annie Sloan CP. I have used the duck egg blue numerous times on vintage furniture prices. The color looks very French when paired with gold accents, like leafing, knobs and gold wax. The color can also look quite shabby chic with ivory and cream colored accents, in hardware and or color blocking. This color works well,with chintz prints in draperies as well as country stripes and checks.

Hi elconno, Not sure if you are in USA but I would suggest two colors by Sherwin-Williams called Upward and Wallstreet. The pic doesn't do the colors justice but the dark one I would put only on the wall your fridge is on - that includes the little strip above the cabinets. This will make the fridge disappear a little and it will be a great wall for a piece of art with a lot of color - it will really pop! The lighter color will go well with any teal accents you want and brighten the space.

Hi I notice your blind and lamp are Laura Ashley Pelham. Laura Ashley does a duck egg white, pale duck egg and duck egg paint colours. Maybe you could have the duck egg white as the predominant colour and use in both rooms but also use the pale duck egg or duck egg in the lounge, or add some wallpaper. Not sure grey walls would work with the kitchen units. Perhaps more of a taupe/warm grey would work in both spaces though.

Hi Emeline Thank you for trying to help. I am afraid I cant remember it in great detail, I thought it was small kitchen plan, and the presses were in duck egg blue but then there was this antique cabinet glass with two doors and the comment was that the cabinet was able to store the couples big collections of glasses. Wow. Thanks so much. Specific paint choices welcomed! We are thinking about BM Ice Milk or Knitted Cape. Reactions? Counter yet to be determined, but we are leaning towards cement or a retro inspired laminate, with some Danby white marble for the salvaged farm cupboard.Right now the cabinet pulls are chrome circa 1940's, which I got from local Architectural Salvage.

We would certainly recommend chalk paint for cabinets. No sanding, or priming, but cabinets need to be very, very clean. You can see the wood grain through the paint, and there are variations of color, which is beautiful. I actually think Milk Paint is a better quality product...not totally sure what is in A.S. Chalk Paint...but risky for old oak cabinets. Vermont Coatings is also a worth while alternative to poly; smooth, non-toxic and very pleasing finish.

I'd finalize the countertop and backsplash first and then pick the wall colors. It is much harder to pick countertops than to pick wall paint. Your kitchen sounds really beautiful!

love your duck egg blue cabinet color! A white quartz countertop with a callacatta 3x6" tile backsplash (shown below) would look wonderful with it. For your walls I like a really pale gray, such as SW7021 Simple White or SW7014 Eider White.
