Dear Éilíse Sullivan, the mahogany wardrobe looks like a great project! The image is too small for me to see the details of it; it looks like has glass/metal door at the top part and design details on the draws. If you send me a better quality image and with the door closed I can visualised it for you in any other colour you like if it helps. Replacing part of the furniture (glass) with solid panels covered in wall paper or fabric, using decoupage for the inside of the drawers or muted colours on the outside and brights on the inside ... are all possibility depending in which room you want to place it and what you are going to use it for. Are you going to do it for yourself, just for fun or to sell/present? I would paint the back panel in a darker colour, also the inside of the wardrobe part and all the horizontal and vertical straight lines to frame the different units: draws, 'open shelf' cabinet at the top and door. I would go for wall paper on the inside of the draws, something sympathetic with the darker tone on the back panel ... the handle can stay or be replaced (I need a closer look); they can really give a wist to the furniture if changed. For the choice of colours ... it really depend on where it goes and what you want to do with it. The room's images you posted are quite different in style. You could try to 'blend' the piece in to the room's design scheme by choosing complementary colours or go the opposite and bring in a bold statement. I like bold statements! As a textile designer and as a householder, I have made dozens of curtains and blinds for all sorts of situations. Using my experience, I would say, the turn in the corners of your windows is quite sharp, not rounded, so I would not go for a bay pole which works better with larger, more rounded bays. Instead I would go for a roman blind, as these are more grown up/finished looking than rollar, which always look a bit bathroom/kitchen (maybe two small additional ones for the smaller edge window sections, make or get them made with black out lining (they hang better too) avoid brass fitting on those, they look very dated, go for silver instead, also avoid twee trimmings like fringe or braid edges. You could make these look extravagant, clean and tailored, rustic modern, or modern scandi, or however you want, depending on the feel of your room. If you want to soften that effect, you could use dress curtains on a pole (no plastic tracks please!) over the outer edge of the window (i.e. not in the bay) - these could be light voile (not nylons or polyesters, cotton or thin linen mix is best) or more lux (that way you don't need a lot of the fabric too, so less expensive. Again, whether you did that or not, and what fabric choice would depend on the look and feel of the effect you're after. I would look at mags or online to get the feel of the room your after first, then look for window treatments that go with that look, referring to points above as you do. Hope that helps!

Hello there... I hope I can be of some help as I have almost an identical sitting room - I will just share with you my sitting room this year!! All the walls started out in Dulux Timeless colour so I wanted to add an accent colour- like you, I have one end of the room that is patio doors. So the opposite wall to those, I chose as an accent wall - I know a lot of people suggest not having an accent wall but perhaps having horizontal painted stripes of colour etc... But as I was doing the painting, I knew I would have made a real hash of that!! So the third pic is my first attempt at an accent wall - The Greene Paint company - colour Bassalt. This was nice but I just got bored of it - it worked well against the richness of the wood floor etc and was very much a statement but in a few months I just couldn't settle with it. After several coats of white I have now settled on Farrow & Balls colour Lamp Room Grey. I know this seems all very neutral, but from the second photo you will see I have gone for cream curtains with neutral vertical pom-poms - but, by doing all this, I can now change the accent colour in this room at the drop of a hat and quite importantly - INEXPENSIVELY! For instance, if I wanted to, for Xmas, if I was going to spend a lot of time in that room, I could a. Go for red and cream cushions and create a Scandinavian look! Or b. Go for silver beaded cushions and silver candle jars and have a winter wonderland look! And equally in the summer, I could go for pastel pink floral cushions and a vase of delicate roses to bring the garden into the sitting room or just keep it neutral with ivory roses and a hint of lime green. So my advice would be to keep the expensive things neutral and then you can alter the in expensive things as you go along. I also think one expensive piece in any room is a good investment - be it a huge oversized pewter bowl or a something similar - that again is neutral in colour but is a statement piece.
