Am wondering what colour to paint the chimney breast that will go with the redbrick back wall, the rest of the walls are a light taupe colour. Am thinking of painting the chimney breast a dark navy colour, what do you think? Any advice please?
There's nothing else in the room navy, but was reading about colours to go with red brick and navy was one of them The chimney breast looks like it's missing something, yes maybe a nice canvas picture would be nice, didn't think of that, thank you.
If you are keeping the light toned wood of the fireplace, maybe a tan color to match that. Goes with brick too :-) but leaves you some wiggle room for adding other colors.
Hi Jonathan. You're right that the chimney breast needs "defining" in some way. In terms of painting, the only way I would go is white, or a a couple of shades lighter or darker than the wall colour -- particularly looking at your ideabook, which shows an inclination towards a kind of spare, airy elegance. You can happily use navy for accents in the room, if you like the idea. But I do agree that looking for a large artwork would be the first thing to do. Find something you love, in the first place -- and if it has a touch of the colour of the brick, so much the better. I love your dramatic fireplace, and the way the wood of the fireplace works with the cabinet. Go with the instincts you show in your ideabook.
The navy sets up a very definite color scheme of red and blue. I think a warm gray the color of the mortar in the brick wall will tie them together and be subtle so you can add whatever you want. The taupe and grey should keep it warm with the oak.
Hi Craig. I experimented with the grey idea on Paint, and found it too soft -- neither one thing nor the other -- in juxtaposition with the dramatic black fireplace. What do you think? So I thought either the contrast of white, or keep it in tone with the walls -- same, lighter, darker. (I love taupe and grey, by the way.)
