POLL: Garden or Rooftop Patio?

Everyone loves an outdoor space, but do you have a preference on the type of outdoor space? Are you a green garden type or a cosmopolitan champ as you laze on the rooftop?

I'd personally mix it up. Sun loungers for relaxing after seeing to your pot plants, herbs & veg in the gap of a double wall. Or pots that over hang a perspex wall to let in more light

I chose Garden, generally more accessible...

Very hard decision - but it would have to be a garden for me.

I voted for gardens as everyone needs their private space and a bit of paradise.

gardens can bring in wild life, birds, butterflies and the rest. Roof gardens can be devoid of this depending on height. We need lush. However in a city like London more roof gardens should be built for diversity.

Claudia I completely agree with you. I would always prefer garden for the very same reasons as you give and also it gives greater scope for planting and I love plants. However roof gardens help to green up spaces which would otherwise be very dead. I have recently designed a roof garden for a client which has now made the space more usable.

    Rooftop with a fantastic view

The old penthouse patio is fine for the working week but one really has to enjoy the garden and its wildlife over the weekend. (At least that's what I'm told :-))

I feel that a great garden offers so much more choice of style, look and feel.

I PREFER A GARDEN, WHICH I THINK IS MORE PERSONAL. I ALSO ALWAYS HAVE A FEAR OF WATER PENETRATION FROM A ROOF GARDEN.

Like most here I say garden whenever possible and practical. In the city however, a rooftop patio with plenty of well seized pots for gardening and a great view of London would sure do it for me.

A garden every time, although roof top patios can be beautiful you will never have the scope for design that you have in an actual garden.

Why not a garden on a roof?

Both is equally pleasing as long it suits the space and use, we dealing with these dilemmas daily in our design studio.

In the hustle and bustle of a city, it's nice to find a green space to sit and ponder over the hectic day.

I like working on both but being in the country side i don't get many opertunities to work on roof top gardens.

I think this one comes down to the location of the site. Sometimes there are better views afforded from an elevated position rather than garden level.

For me it depends on the surrounding landscape. If a rooftop overlooks a stunning skyline then a roof terrace can be an inspirational place to be. Likewise if a garden is adjacent to rolling countryside or a dramatic woodland setting. So both get my vote!

Depending on location - roof terrace links to the skies, garden can be more romantic and intimate

In the city - rooftop hands down! Romantic views of the skyline. It also feels more like your own private, quiet space among the havoc of the city, while city gardens are often small and squeezed in between neighbours'.
