Need help with matching wall colour up with wallpaper mural

So I bought this wallpaper mural ages ago and finally got around to putting it up. I personally love it however now I feel I could do more with the room to compliment it. In the showhouse beside us they painted all the walls and wardrobes in this room which I think looks cool so I thought maybe I could do something similar but I don't want it to be too dark or too over the top. Would really appreciate any advice.

It was actually too sunny (which is not something that can be said too often in Ireland ;o)) to take a full panoramic photo - will try again a little later when it's not so bright.

I would go a very light tone of the blue.

If you want custom cream panelling built from scratch, it is likely to take you more than three weeks to line up a contractor, get it built and then painted. If you want to use beadboard (thin, lightweight, cheap) you can do it yourself if you are good at the small precision cuts around the wood window trim and behind the radiators. You can get a custom built wood cover with doors for your tv or use the painting over tv disguise made with hinges. I think the room is beautiful as it is. Spend some money on a truly beautiful, impressive chandelier, have it centered over the table. If you want to impress relatives at an event, the chandelier is the way to go. Clean the windows for extra sparkle. If you are in the US, try Home Decorators http://www.homedecorators.com for DVD storage cabinets that are closed. I would not get a rug for this room unless I was ready to get it cleaned frequently and I could find one that looked good with dog hair on it and did not show stains. A good quality, highly patterned wool Oriental rug will do that job nicely. Such a rug is an investment and may take longer than three weeks to find.

Your old gold chair color is a bit hard to match with today's color palettes which usually use a softer gold. Have you thought about taking a blue into the dining room? Blue and gold is a very elegant combination and will compliment the mahogany floor and table. You could look for a stripe or a damask for the drapes or a wallpaper that would incorporate your chosen colors. An oriental rug would be a good way to tie in colors.

DO NOT USE DRUNK TANK PINK FOR A ROOM! Sorry, Groveraxle, but further down in the site you linked to it said, "Prisoners did respond and calmed down, as hoped, initially. Major goof: If they hung around too long, they became even more violent." Some police depts. have a pink room, but are cautioned not to let anyone remain in it more than 1 hour. It's called the rebound effect. I read about this while working for a state police agency.

Sorry, yes, I didn't explain very well, did I... I meant that as your room seems to be quite light, floor included, a dark grey that matches the bird on your wallpaper would give you that wow factor (pic1 below). You could then work on the layering textures within the same colour palette too with the rest of your accessories (rugs, mirrors etc). Or if you're not too keen on greys, pick out one of the other colours if you prefer- you have a good selection of pink, blue, green or yellow. As long as you match the exact shade you can't go wrong, in my humble opinion. I've attached a few pics below to show you what I mean xx

I agree - the light blue will look fab - maybe buy an assortment of cushions to go on the seating in the same bunch of colours too ?

I would go with any of the colors in the mural that you prefer, but only paint the vertical portion of the wall. Leave the angled and flat ceiling portions alone.

Don't bother with a panoramic photo. It's not really useful to us. I will return after I paint your wall.

I agree the blue looks the best out of the photos - only problem is we are not major fans of blue and the room is quite big. I was thinking maybe the darker shade of brown as it might be earthy - although it might be too much with the sofa being beige.

I like the blue also, but paint the ceiling the cream of the mural??

Thanks for that groveraxle - we might be changing the sofa in that room so I could possibly pick a different colour sofa next time so it's not so inline with the walls. That said I love how vibrant the mural is - does the brown wall colour make it look dull? Spoke with DH and there is no way he will go for the blue.

How about painting the wall/ceiling the cream, then get toss pillows in all of the colors of your mural?

The walls actually are cream at the moment - I know they look white in the picture. I think I just thought it would warm the room up a bit to use a different colour. However I can certainly add coloured cushions. Also I currently have no window dressing in that room so I can tie the colour in that way too.

Blue's best; the brown above, second. If you go with brown, you might need to go sofa shopping. Unless groveraxle can show you some throw pillows that could make it work.

In Groveraxle's examples, I like the coral as well as the blue, but I'd like to see it with the angled part of the wall and ceiling in cream. That's a wonderful mural, by the way!!

I agree, the coral looks good. I just wonder how it would be if the entire, large room is this red.
