Ideas for georgian house landscape/renovation

We are working on a Georgian house renovation in County Meath, Ireland. Part of the house dates back to 1788. I'd love any ideas of what to do with the bare area at the back of the house. We had to skim the earth to remove all brambles and weeds that had really taken over. While we could do just lawn with hardcore in the drive and it would be pretty amazing, I'd love ideas on what else we could do for borders or other landscaping that would bring it to life. This is south facing and a typical Irish climate (wet/cool most of the year).

May I suggest since you are going to be weed fighting for a time, that you cut a curving path or track to place dg over gravel on with a border, and rake in native wildflower seed after the next rain - see if you have a native plant society and phone to ask who is the commercial restoration seed supplier in your region ( it will be lovely things like lupine, lacy whites, )

They will have a stock mix for your area and that will bring you some simple loveliness whilst you determine more long term goals . .. the larger elements provide some nice shelter and enclosure here . . . possible you would want to go up the slope to where you've a nice view and make a larger area (again, using edge or pavers for edge, put down gravel then decomposed granite or chip seal (local term here, sorry) - something that will drain and provide a destination for a short ramble

eventually, you might plant a garden along the way from here to there .. .

don't tear anything out that is established . . as with trimming it will give you a mix of sizes so you can layer in the garden

I'd take some photos of the view from the windows you look out most often. What do you see? What do you want to see? It might mean putting in a meter-wide border along whatever hedges you see. Traditional cottage plantings are easy with annuals from seed. Try the annuals for a year, then decide what more permanent features you want.

Definitely art deco. This is a hard one. From houzz pictures, it looks as though you could extend the Juliet floor out and then add a roof but a builder would have to figure that one out. You could have another roof line on the side and have your porch there and access it from inside, which might turn out even better as you would have a great summer entertaining spot. Have you put in Art Deco in exterior photos? Great ideas.

Thanks for the feedback, we had something similar in mind. Would you suggest bringing the door out to the front? What about the windows either side, we would think about replacing maybe in a different colour, possibly grey, and add some cedar cladding to the house front and paint walls grey. We are also toying with the idea of bring double doors out to the front with arclight over head and then to add coving around the windows with arc that mirrors the arc light to try and soften the whole angular look to to the front. Jen, are you sure everything is in proportion? I'm asking, because that store seems to be just a bit wider than a door (so about 1 m) which is fine, but doesn't give much space to manoeuvre inside it. Also, a bit too many doors in a small space, but I'm afraid I can't offer you a remedy for that. You have two wide, massive windows and a door in between, I think that will give plenty of light. Personally, I'd just add skylights or a glass roof. Or a long strip of glass all along What you don't seem to have is ventilation windows. Trust me, you're going to want one in the utility, or at least a good fan. Transom style windows could work too if you can open them. I really wish you'd see an architect... there are lots of different, small things that a professional can spot from miles away that you wouldn't even consider. As I said, I regret we didn't; our house is great, but it could've been even better!

You are in the perfect stage to hire a landscape designer. Georgian landscape designs can be tradition and also modern depending on your styles. They use a lot of green style plants and shrubs. Water features are also a must too.

Your climate is perfect for the habitats we create since wildflowers thrive along our waters in mild climates. Verdant meadows just fit with Ireland. My feeling is a preponderance of rock and mulch that we see in the US would not fit here. Of course our preference is no mulch and rock only where it makes sense ecologically.

I see a meandering stream here instead of still water. The vast majority of landscape streams do not look natural to us. Be very selective of your designer to get the real look that you see in natural settings in Ireland. Words are cumbersome. our photos on houzz and on google+ may speak better : www.tiny.cc/ponds
